What You Should Know About Failure

I was in a dark place.

My mom had just died. I was forced to sell off three properties and lost 70% of what I put into them. I didn’t have the money to lose. My six-week-old daughter was relying on me for strength, and I felt like I had nothing left to give.

I had spent 15 years dreaming up a life for myself, and in the moment that it was finally becoming a reality, I lost it. I failed.

But that’s just the thing. You can fail in an instant. What matters is what you do next.

This year, I have doubled my income. I purchased new properties and I run multiple businesses. I am my own boss, and I am more energized than ever to grow my wealth and build my legacy.

In episode 5 of the Black Girl Fly podcast, Tenisha and I recount some of our hardest failures and how it was exactly those failures that powered us each into our most profitable year to date. Uncover how to reframe your thinking about failure, learn how to take risks, and find out what’s at stake if you don’t.

Fortune sides with those who dare.

Dare to start? Try out these 4 legacy-building actions you can do right now:

1.      Take a moment to write, in as much detail as possible, the kind of life you want to live. Whether it’s your personal life, career, living situation, or feeling, get it all down on paper (or type it up).

2.      Craft a letter to yourself, the future self who might be tired, possibly full of doubt that her dreams are going to come true. Be kind to her. Remind her how you’re feeling right now: energized.

3.      Determine one goal that you can do tomorrow that’s going to get you closer to your dream life.

4.      Once you’ve completed that goal, take a picture – a selfie, a picture of what you worked on, anything that inspires you – and post it to Instagram with #blackgirlfly. We’ll respond with encouragement and a virtual high-five!
